Back at LCG, I sometimes dream of housing a car collection like this, but my dreams are kept in check by the reality that I enjoy building cars more than collecting them. Now, I had the task of translating cardboard templates into a wooden structure for the body plug roof area. I settled on the use of 5/8-inch plywood as this thickness would be good enough to resist warping but also flexible enough to maneuver around rollbar tubes during placement.
The roof profile and windshield forms came first, then I fabricated a couple more cross pieces to complete the passenger compartment roof area. Many notches were required to fit the forms together and allow them to protrude through the rollcage. Drywall screws and a couple of props hold the forms in place.
My GTO chassis is now ready for fitting up fiberglass body panels. I'm excited to get to this project phase, as soon my car will start looking more like a sleek sports car instead of a sandrail. The adrenaline rush from seeing the vintage race cars has me more excited than ever with the project. I can only wish you the same kind of good fortune in your car-gazing encounters.
