He was right. Once he received his parts, he began putting his 427 S/C together. Unique builds their frames on a 2x4-inch box-steel ladder-type design. A Jaguar independent suspension unit was used out back, with the center section assembled with 3.54:1 gears and a Posi. Carrera coilover shocks were used out back as well as in the front of the car. The front suspension was made by Unique Motorcars based on a double A-arm design. Wilwood disc brakes with vented 11.5-inch rotors and four-piston calipers are found on each corner, as are retro-looking Cragar 15-inch wheels (8s up front, 10s out back). The wheels are aluminum, not vintage steel, and are shod with BFGoodrich rubber (245/60 front, 295/50 rear).
So can you have a 427 S/C without a 427 motor? Well, sure, you can do whatever you want in the kit and replicar world! Glenn chose to build a 418 Ford based on a FE 390 block. The bore was punched .0040 over and coupled with a 428CJ iron crank and Keith Black hypereutec-tic pistons (with Hastings moly rings) to achieve the desired displacement.
Southern Automotive's Bill Parham assembled the engine with one of their camshafts, topping off the long block with a pair of ported and polished Edelbrock RPM heads and an Offy aluminum single plane intake. Up top a single 650 Holley carb feeds the beast, sucking in air through a Stellings turkey-baster air cleaner. The entire ignition system is MSD-based, from the coil and distributor to the wires and rev limiter, and exhaust exits through Unique Motorcars' custom-built headers. For gear selection, Glenn shifts with a four-speed Top Loader.
A custom Griffin aluminum... A custom Griffin aluminum radiator fits the nose of Glenn's ride, and twin chrome fans help keep the engine running cool. | Snider turned to Bill Parham... Snider turned to Bill Parham and Southern Automotive to get the right powerplant for his roadster. Starting with a FE 390 block, the bore was increased .0040 for a final displacement of 418 cubes. Internally, the big block was fitted with a cast-iron 428CJ crank, Keith Black hypereutectic pistons, and Hastings moly rings. A single 750 Holley carb bolts to an Offy manifold, which is attached to a pair of Edelbrock RPM aluminum heads. MSD supplied the entire ignition system (coil, distributor, wires, etc.), and the whole shebang is bolted to a four-speed Top Loader trans. | The wheels may look like decades-old... The wheels may look like decades-old throwbacks, and that's what Glenn wanted, but these are new aluminum SS wheels from Cragar rather than the heavy steel ones from the '60s. The wheel hubs had to be modified with a milled aluminum spacer to accept the spinners, but the 15x8 and 15x10 wheels look great wrapped with BFGoodrich rubber. |
