Russo And Steele's Monterey Auction To Offer Csx 2138 And Csx 2011Russo and Steele will present their fifth annual "Monterey Sports and Muscle at the Marriott" on August 20 in Monterey, California. This ultra-premium collector car auction runs concurrent with the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and Monterey Historic Races at Laguna Seca, and among its showcase of vehicles to be sold will be two significant Shelby Competition roadsters: the CSX 2138 and CSX 2011.
Last year's Russo and Steele Monterey auction featured 84 cars and grossed over $6,000,000. Several world records were set, including $473,000 for an ex-Parnelli Jones Boss 302 Mustang racecar, $48,400 for an Alfa Romeo Sprint Speciale SSZ, and $1,200,000 for a Ferrari Enzo.
Russo and Steele heads to Monterey with momentum, as they gained international notoriety at their recent January auction (covered in the July '05 KC), where an ex-Dan Gurney Shelby factory Cobra sold for a staggering $2,100,000.
CSX2011 made its initial appearance at the all-important '62 Nassau Island race, and CSX2138 was one of three '63 competition Cobras raced by Shelby American, and only one of eight 289 factory racers ever produced. The 2138 has an illustrious racing history, including Sebring and Nassau Island in 1964, and it is the most extensively raced Cobra ever, appearing on the racing circuit regularly from 1963 to 1979. One of 2138's original drivers, Dan Gerber, will drive it across the auction block.
An auction preview downtown at the Monterey Marriott will be held Friday night, August 19, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It will be open to the public and admission is free. For more information, to consign or obtain a bidders credential, visit www.russoandsteele.com.
