Ecocat Steering Column Installation - Steered in the Right Direction

Using an MIG welder, the mounting plate is tack welded to the underdash brace.

The column is wrapped in cloth for protection from any weld splatter.

After the welds cool down, the column is removed and the mounting plate receives the final weld.

With final welding completed, the cover is mocked up, and a second fiberglass piece is tested for fit.

After significant trimming and fitting, the final version of the two-piece cover smooths the break from the firewall to the cover.

To achieve a finished look for the firewall, a slit must be cut in it to accommodate existing lines.

Rather than spend time doing the final fiberglass work on the steering column mount, it will be done during the other fiberglass modifications. A quick examination of the "look" of the modifications is achieved by simply masking the area and the column.

Next, a quick shot of rattle can primer helps give an idea of the finished appearance.

When the body is blown apart for bodywork and paint, the fiberglass pieces will be incorporated into the firewall.

With the column installed in the Ecocat, the steering shaft is cut to length.

Using the forged true universal joints, the shaft is attached to the column.

The bottom of the steering shaft attaches to the rack, leaving a first-rate steering system.

The steering shaft fits great, and the Flaming River parts look outstanding.

Although the shaft is slightly angled to reach the rack, the wheel turns flawlessly, without the slightest hint of binding.

After the turbo plumbing is attached, the installation is complete.

With the Flaming River column and linkage installed on the Ecocat, steering feel is solid and smooth. Only final exhaust routing, gas pedal installation, and latching mechanisms for the tilt front end remain before the car will be disassembled and prepped for paint at Nelson's Custom Paint.
