There used to be another kit car forum which had a rather legthy discussion on the 300SL. Its hard to keep track but at this time the only manufacturer of a 300SL kit is Thoroughbred Motorcars in Mt Dora Florida. Does anyone on this forum have a kit or know someone with one. I have been working on mine for several years now. Its always good to exchange ideas. You can only learn so much from the Cobra guys!

Back in the early '80s, I recall seeing a 90-degree V-twin motorcycle engine that used SBC pistons, rods, valve gear, valvetrain geometry with a custom air-cooled block and heads, crank and camshaft. Kind of 1/4 of a Chev V8. It was designed for the homebuilt motorcycle market. I was thinking such a beast might be appropriate for a microcar replica... Does anyone else remember this? WHL

Hello. As you read in the title, I'm just starting with the kit car hobby. I've looked thru a number of sites and found 3 that appeal to me. What I'd like to know is: what people think of these companies, if anyone thinks that there are better companies out there, and which one might be the easier to build. The 3 companies I'm looking at are Factory Five Racing, Lone Star Classics, and Caterham. The cars I'm looking at putting together are the MK3 Roadster, LS427 Roadster, and the Seven Classic (respectively). After building one of the above, I might go for a second one...possibly one from the aformentioned companies (like the LS40 from Lone Star Classics). So...what do you all suggest?

I'm planning to build a high-performance kit car. One of the elements of the build that fulfills a long-standing geek desire of mine has to do with electronics, LCD-video, cameras (as replacement for mirrors) and integrated GPS. So I'm looking for information on how to construct a center console (the kit has no console connecting the dash to the floorboard in it's design) to house a number of color LCD screens, a touch screen controller and then the requisite camera technology and GPS (Garmin and/or Magellan makes a screenless unit that could 'plug in') and audio system (that could be a standalone unit) to make it all work. Any suggestions? I'm a newbie on kit cars but a bit of a long-standing auto geek. Thanks, Verde

I read through the article "Applying Lizard Skin On An FFR Roadster" and had hoped more information would be provided as to how this product actually performed after it was applied. The writer indicates he has used "most of the products out there over the past 9 years" to deaden sound and control heat transfer. If this is the case one would hope that at least one sentence would be writen about how much better this product was compared to "most of the products out there". What has been shown is that this product in my view takes a long long time to apply it. From what I read it took about two full days after prep. Furthermore it has to be applied using two different products, one for sound control and another for heat control. This is hardly convenience. He also mentioned that a 95 F temperature slowed the drying time. This will limit how, when and where you apply it, again not convenient. There are other multi-ceramic insulation coatings available that are single component and can be applied in a fraction of the time regardless of the temperature. Variations of these products have been around for almost 20 years and can control heat transfer (and sound)to specified targets. They were designed for industrial applications such as on steam piping and heat ducting. At least 3 Nascar teams has been using one particular ceramic coating on a regular basis. That said it would appear that a better solution is not necessarily that which is marketed just to the car industry alone. This article appears more about advertising and self-promotion.

I am building a Locost 7, and I am at the wiring stage. My problem is that I have no diagram for the Sierra Column switches, which still have short wires protruding from them. I would like to connect the new loom to the column switches. I know which new loom wires to use but do not know colour code from the Sierra switches to connect to (Indicators, dipped and flash, side lights and head lights and wiper washers). Does anybody have the diagram I need? Your help would be much appreciated.

Hi all, I'm new to the forum today but I'm a old cobra lover since 1991. Some of you may remember me from the March 1997 Kit Car Mag. issue on which I was front cover. I have been talking ocassionly with Julie( new EM owner) with my needs for EM repair parts but no follow up yet. (2 months) My old cobra needs new collectors and turn outs and only they have the jigs. Anybody hear any news of whats going on there? I have a 427 side oiler stroked to 452, 2x 4's, wild cam, Dove rocker shafts, JE 12.5 pistons, Manley valves, Lemans rods, large shaft top-loader,Lakewood housing, Ram clutch and ford 9-inch 3.73. I've been hearing all this stuff from kids trying to get their hands on a Nissan Skyline GTR which they can legally drive in the US, but unfortunately nobody has been able to do it since its pretty much impossible to get imported and registered. One guy over on Import Tuner suggested bringing over a shell and swapping in an RB26 out of a junked out Skyline and having it registered as a kit car, but would this even be possible to do?
