Here's my '59 Devin SS. I intend to race it at some vintage races, so I'll need to add a roll bar to satisfy the club's racing regulations, as well as have some added safety.

This is a computer-generated sketch I did of the car with the proposed headrest. This allowed me to try several roll-bar configurations to see how they'd look first. The first step is to measure for bar height. It needs to be 2.5 inches above the top of the driver's helmet to keep most race officials happy. If you intend to share driving privileges with someone taller, give yourself some extra room or measure them in the car as well.

One of the things that made this job special was the headrest, which made the installation a little more involved. It also kept me from using a driver-side roll bar with a rear brace. Plus, a full-width bar also protects your passenger if you drive your car on the street or in rallies.

After determining the height and mount locations for the finished roll bar, Minette cut a length of 1.75-inch x .120-wall steel tubing (with some extra length to fine-trim when finished). Do not cut to exact length, or you may end up with a nasty surprise, since it is easy to miss on the allowance for the bends. Then he chucked the tubing in his mandrel bender for the first bend.

A mandrel bender will not neck the pipe down like a muffler shop bender. Roll bars with "necks" don't make it through tech (a little poetry coming at ya). Minette oiled the tube so it would slide easily in the bender.

The first angle was bent into the tube. This required a gentle touch on the power control.

The bar was then laid on the floor while Minette found the exact center. This is critical to make sure the bar fits correctly.

Once the center had been marked, Minette marked the tubing for the location of the second bend.
