Quality control is the name of the game at WheelSmith, and this begins at the start of each wheel's assembly. Using a hydraulic press, the steel wheel center is pressed into the hoop to the correct offset. Then a dial indicator checks the trueness of the wheel.

Once satisfied the wheel is round, Chris Sage tack welds the center in place. The wheel is then again checked for trueness-only then does the final welding take place. It is then checked a third time for trueness.

Something you don't see on too many other manufacturer's wheels is the machining WheelSmith does to the backside of the wheel center. This insures it will sit flat against the brake drum or the rotor hat.

Check out the butt-weld seam on this wheel-or rather the lack thereof. WheelSmith satin polishes the seam of every hoop before they go off for chroming or powdercoating to make sure you get a good finish.

Here are the artillery wheels made for the Hauler just after the final welding took place. Though the Hauler has a Chevy 5 on 4.75-inch bolt circle (because we're using an S-10 chassis), the rims are multi-lug and also feature the Ford 5 on 4.5-inch bolt circle, too.

After liberal applications of rattlecan red to the rims, the hubcaps were timed to the valve stem (the wheel stem at 6 o'clock with the logo horizontal) and then popped in place.

Painted the same red as we'll use on the exterior of the truck, the WheelSmith artillery wheel is reminiscent of a vintage Willys artillery wheel, and the original-looking hubcap makes it appear even better!
